It’s been 100 times harder than I thought it would be to balance working from home and taking care of a five and three-year-old full time. The truth is they need me almost every waking moment right now. Like us they are uprooted, isolated, and a little unsure. So we are adapting and finding a new sense of normal that works for us.
Unfortunately, this means that I have to restructure what my work and my expectations look like. I am taking no more than 3 client calls per day and doing more work at night, so that I can be present in my other role as Mom. Some days that is even a stretch and I feel like Jimmy Fallon as my girls make cameo appearances on my Zoom calls. Yesterday Dylan (3) came in to announce a trip to the bathroom “and I didn’t wash my hands”. Thankfully my client laughed. You just have to roll with it!
Can you relate?
I was watching the news last night and a story came on about how models show we may have to follow stay-at-home precautions until 2022. It made me think a little harder about what life and business will look like over the next few years. I’m thinking about my business and how it needs to adapt over the next 3-months, 1year, 3 years and I’m encouraging my clients to do the same. It requires a lot of soul searching and trying to determine how you can pivot your business for a “new normal”.
Here are some things I’m asking myself:
- At my core, what do I do to help people? What is my business really about? What do I want it to be about?
- How can I pivot so that I can continue to serve the people and businesses who need me?
- How can I creatively and innovatively position myself and my business in the new reality?
