This week I have been preparing for my next How to Wear All the Shoes masterclass and the theme of possibilities and imagining your life as you want it to be is woven all throughout the training class. My oldest daughter is finishing kindergarten in a few weeks which has me a little awestruck of how this little girl could already be finished with her first year of school. Before Morgan was even born, I bought this canvas for her bedroom with a quote from the Dr. Seuss book Oh! The Places You’ll Go on it. I was looking at it the other night in her room and was reminded of how inspiring it was to me at the time as I dreamed of all the possibilities of who this little girl would become.
Exploring this idea of possibilities and imagining your life is an exercise I have all my business coaching clients complete early on in our relationship. I ask them to sit and dream a little. I do this because I want you to take time to write the story of your ideal life and business. I want you to really allow yourself to dream and to think about what it would look and feel like to create everything you desire.
For this exercise, there are no inhibitions, no limits, nothing is out of reach. If I could wave my magic wand and make anything possible, where would it take you? What would your ideal day look like? Where would you be? What would you be doing? How does your day begin? What does your business look like? Who are you surrounded by? What are you doing with your free time? Tell me exactly what it is you want.
Oh! The Places Can Go!
When we allow ourselves the freedom to think about what it is that we really want for our lives, it puts us in control. You can see and feel the destination. You become motivated to achieve it. You start taking steps to make it reality. Only when you know where you are headed, what you really, truly want for your life, can you make a plan and set goals to make it happen.
This exercise also helps you kick start your subconscious. When you regularly are thinking and talking and writing about what you want your life to look like, it sends signals to your subconscious that it better pay attention because this new reality is important. It puts the subconscious to work figuring out how to rectify the gap between the current reality and the picture you are painting of your future. There are tens of thousands of pieces of information coming into your brain every day. Your subconscious filters most of that out. The pieces it feels are irrelevant never even make it to your consciousness. We want to tell it to find and show us the opportunities that help us create our ideal life.
My challenge to you is to take 20 or 30 minutes this week and allow yourself to dream. Write down everything that comes into your mind. Don’t filter it. Don’t worry about how you will achieve it. If it is important to you, write it down. Every day go back and read this story of your ideal life and allow your subconscious to show you the opportunities to make it a reality.
Get out of the waiting place and stop letting life just happen to you. As Dr. Seuss would say “Congratulations! Today is your day. You’re off to Great Places! You’re off and away!…Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So…get on your way!”
