I was talking with a new client today and he hesitantly shared with me the 3-5 year plan that I had asked him to prepare. He mentioned that he had spent 5 painstaking hours creating this for our discussion and felt that it really reflected his aspirations over the next few years.
Then he hinged. He proceeded to say that he knew it was “modest” and that it probably wasn’t as grand as what I have seen from other clients. He was worried about what I would think about his aspirations.
The truth is that all our goals, dreams and journeys are different. They are our unique stories. Our mindset has to shift from being concerned with what others will think to being content with doing the things that fulfill us. We need to be more focused on identifying and building plans that help us go after the things that will make us happy.
We get to decide what we want for ourselves and our life, then it is our responsibility to choose to act and pursue it. Those dreams and goals look different for each of us, but that doesn’t mean they are right or wrong. They are simply uniquely ours.
Who cares if you aren’t Jeff Bezos or Oprah? If your dream is to run a modest yet successful business that pays you well and makes your heart happy while allowing you to have time with family and friends, volunteer in your community and take Friday afternoons off to do things that recharge you…well then I say you are WINNING. Somewhere along the way we become so focused on what we do (and the status that comes with it), that we have lost sight of WHY we do it.
So, my challenge for you today is to remove your constraints and give yourself permission to explore the question “what do I really want my life to look like?”. What would you be doing? Who would you be working with? Where would you live? Who is in your life? What do you do with your free time? Then ask what you need to do today to start creating this life you desire.
